In Pursuit of a World Class City
The contemporary Indian city is a remarkable site- a petri-dish of ambitions and aspirations. Like every city, Mumbai too has its own hankerings. Perhaps it has its own dreams of becoming as flamboyant as its cousin- Shanghai. Everyone here too seems to contribute their bit towards it, as if they were designed to do so. However, beneath this seemingly harmonious organism lies layers upon layer of struggles and contestations. The series was an attempt to exhibit the shades of contradictions and dichotomies of Mumbai which is a harbour of multiple dreams and aspirations. Terms like 'world class, 'planned' and 'smart' often come up when dealing with the urban, often used loosely and with a deliberate sense of vagueness. What do each of these terms mean to different settlers? How does the city negotiate the vicissitudes of intersecting class identities and their aspirations? Development and progress seems to be the mantra surrounding these urban settlements, but rarely do we engage ourselves with questions like 'development for whom?' or at whose expense?
